Can hearing aids affect relationships?

This is a great question! How can hearing instruments affect your relationships? Typically people will experience a positive change in their relationships once they begin to wear hearing aids.  When a hearing loss goes for years without any intervention or without addressing the issue, it can take its toll on a relationship.  Loved ones can often become frustrated with untreated hearing loss because they have to repeat themselves numerous time, and even then their communication partner still didn’t understand.  Hearing aids can help you maintain your speech understanding capabilities and they can help you communicate with your partner more effectively.  The person trying to hear is less tired from all the effort put towards understanding, less frustrated being they don’t have to ask people to repeat as often and less apt to avoid social situations out of fear of not understanding.  The person communicating with the person with hearing loss is less frustrated and less resentful of their partners because they have taken a positive step toward trying to help themselves hear better.  If you are considering hearing instruments and would like to make an appointment, call 440-205-8848.

Can hearing loss cause someone to withdraw from family and friends?

This is a topic we address quite frequently. Yes, withdrawal from communication interaction is often directly related to hearing loss.  Hearing loss can have a significant impact on our emotional, physical and mental well being. Those with hearing loss are likely to experience a number of negative emotions.  Often, the frustration and embarrassment of being unable to hear and understand conversation may lead to withdrawal (retreating into the background) and isolation from social situations.

Concentration and active listening can also be very tiring, contributing to fatigue.  This becomes a vicious cycle:  If we are fatigued, it is difficult to pay attention, which results in understanding even less of what is being said, causing anxiety and physical tension.  This type of exhaustion can often lead to depression.

The first step is recognizing a loved one is beginning to withdraw from social interaction. This is an indication he/she could be having trouble hearing.  A complete hearing assessment would answer questions regarding hearing and the benefit one can receive from the use of hearing aids.  It is important to recognize these other implications of hearing loss.  Schedule a complete Hearing Evaluation with an audiologist.

What impact does hearing loss have on quality of life?

Untreated hearing loss has been known to have a significant impact on the quality of one’s life.  A multitude of emotions surround those with hearing loss.  To name a few:  sadness, anger, frustration, embarrassment, feelings of inadequacy, isolation, loneliness and loss of concentration.  Often these feelings can lead to exhaustion, withdrawal and depression.

Treatment of hearing loss, with the fitting with hearing aids, has been shown to improve:

  •  Earning power
  • Communication in relationships
  • Intimacy and warmth in family relationships
  • Ease of communication
  • Emotional stability
  • Physical health
  • Group social participation

Additionally, treatment for hearing loss also reduces anger and frustration in relationships, feelings of anxiety and paranoia, depression and self-criticism.  Research by the National Council on Aging has demonstrated that hearing aids clearly are associated with impressive improvements in the social, emotional, psychological and physical well-being of those with hearing loss.  Being fit with hearing aids has the potential to positively change your life.  Start the year off right, call to schedule a complete Hearing Assessment to determine if hearing aids will be helpful to you.

How does the Lyric fit in the ear?

The instrument, called Lyric, is actually hidden deep inside of the ear canal and fits approximately 4 millimeters from the ear drum.  This is not an implant and it can be removed with a very small tool.  It is worn 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  It has a unique long-term battery that lasts for about 3 to 4 months.

A trained audiologist will place the Lyric (extended wear device) in your ear canal.  The instrument is programmed to your auditory needs.  Lyric works with the anatomy of your ear.  It takes natural sound and simply makes it more audible.  There is, therefore, no need for multiple settings and programs.  A magnet is used to control the volume and to turn it on and off.

Lyric is the first hearing device that can be worn effortlessly in almost any situation; i.e., talking on the phone, sleeping at night, exercising and even showering.  It is 100% invisible.  It cannot be seen from any angle, at any time.  It is generally so comfortable that you may even forget it is in your ear!

When the battery runs out, you simply return to your audiologist for a short visit, at which time it will be removed and replaced with a new instrument.  The advantage to this is you will automatically receive performance upgrades on the device and you have a hearing aid you do not have to maintain.

How does the Lyric extended wear hearing aid work?

Lyric is the first and only extended wear hearing aid.  It was built by a team of ENT physicians, audiologists, and engineers around three key concepts that audiologists have known for years:

  • Sound Quality improves with proximity to the eardrum
  • Many people with hearing loss are dissatisfied with their hearing aid options
  • Many people with hearing loss want a hassle-free, invisible solution

The design is unique. There are two soft foam seals engineered to contour to the ear canal.  The seals are coated with a technology developed to protect the device from moisture and earwax.  They are bio-compatible with the human body.  It is safe to wear the devices 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, up to four months at a time.   The battery is designed to last up to several months eliminating the need to change and buy hearing aid batteries.  The sound processing system is programmable to each person’s needs.  The device works millimeters from the eardrum, allowing for both microphone and receiver to fit in the ear canal.  This deep placement allows for natural sound quality and a truly invisible hearing aid.
